[00:00:00] Speaker A: It's Stay Control Tuesday, and I'm on the phone with Mansa Musa. And, Mansa, you emailed me something that I think is really important for us to talk about, especially these days. So this series is going to be called why We Buy. And how are we going to curb the urge to spend when we have so much stuff coming at us? [00:00:22] Speaker B: Yeah, if someone's always trying to sell you something. Okay. So, you know, have you ever gone to the store for one thing and walked out with a five? [00:00:34] Speaker A: Yeah, yesterday. [00:00:36] Speaker B: Or open Amazon or some other online retailer to buy one item and ended up with a full shopping cart? You're not alone. We all been there. Right? So today we're going to kick off a new series called why We Buy. Over the next several weeks, we're going to look at strategies that retailers and online stores use to influence our buying decisions. Now, not because they're doing anything wrong. That's just what businesses do. But the more we understand those strategies, the much more likely we are to make buying decisions that are right for our households. [00:01:16] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:01:16] Speaker B: So let me leave you with three ideas today, and we want to encourage people to come back or check our [email protected] to stay up to date on this series as we do it. But the first one is whether you're shopping in the store or online, almost everything is designed to encourage you to buy. Whether it's product placement, sales signs, recommendations, reviews, even the order that things appear on your screen. They're all there for a reason. [00:01:53] Speaker A: Absolutely. [00:01:54] Speaker B: Second, most of us like to think we're completely rational shoppers. The truth is, all of us are influenced from time to time. Yeah, that's not a weakness. That's just part of being human. Third, the best tool you have isn't a coupon or rewards card or a shopping app. It's the ability to pause. Mm before you put anything in your cart. Or click Buy. Now, stop for just a moment and ask yourself, why am I buying this? If it's because it fits your needs, your budget, your goals, great. If it's because you got caught up in the moment, maybe give it another minute. [00:02:43] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:02:43] Speaker B: Over the next several weeks, we'll show you simple ways to recognize these buying influences and stay in control whether you're shopping at the grocery store, your favorite local business online, or even at restaurants. So this is Take Control Tuesday. Here's your challenge for this week. Okay. The next time you're about to make an unplanned purchase, pause and ask yourself one simple question. Why am I buying this? That one question may save you more money than you think. For sure be an intentional buyer, not just a consumer. [00:03:24] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah. I go through this every time I'm on Amazon. You go and search for something and the next thing you know, Alexa is asking me if I want the sale on the item that I looked at and it drives me bananas. [00:03:40] Speaker B: They know what they're doing and that's what we're going to do in this series. Once again, not a problem if it's something you need right or fixed your goal but a lot of times we need to be aware of what the apps and even the store layout. Right. You walk in the store and just the way they lay it out makes you buy things. [00:04:02] Speaker A: So yep, raising my hand on that chocolate I saw yesterday. The series is called why we buy and tell you what, I'm looking forward to it myself. In the meantime, I want you to go to take control Tuesday.com like listen Share because we're going to get into it. [00:04:22] Speaker B: Mansa, thank you, thank you.
