Show Notes

I had the joy of welcoming my brother and friend, Larry Clark, into the studio. Many of you know Larry as a gospel artist, songwriter, author, and producer—with legendary roots as the grandson of Dr. Mattie Moss Clark. But this season, Larry is stepping onto a different stage. On September 27th at Detroit’s Music Hall, he’s presenting Will You Marry Me?, a musical stage play based on his book and soundtrack of the same name. This is not just a play—it’s Larry’s story. From teenage years to today, audiences will follow his real-life journey of love, faith, struggle, and redemption. […]

[00:00:00] Speaker A: I have Larry Clark, my brother, my friend, in the studio with me. How are you? [00:00:05] Speaker B: I'm good, Randy. Yay. [00:00:09] Speaker A: This is a long time in the making because we've been trying to work these little details out over the last couple months, but I'm thrilled to have you in the studio. I got a chance to see you on TV the other day, you and your beautiful kids. [00:00:24] Speaker B: Thank you. [00:00:24] Speaker A: Talking about this that you have coming up at the music hall. [00:00:29] Speaker B: Correct. [00:00:30] Speaker A: And tell me the name of it. [00:00:32] Speaker B: It is called will you marry me? And it is a love story. It's like this story of my life, and it's based on the book and the soundtrack by the same title. Will you marry me? [00:00:44] Speaker A: Yeah. Listen, you've been through such a journey in your life, and I know from people who may have seen you on social media, your family is the family. [00:00:57] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. [00:00:58] Speaker A: Clark sisters, Maddie Moss Clark. Your family is that family. [00:01:04] Speaker B: Okay. [00:01:05] Speaker A: So sometimes when you see that, you go, oh, okay. Well, I. I already know about them. [00:01:12] Speaker B: Right, right, right, right. [00:01:13] Speaker A: But what they don't know is what they don't know. [00:01:16] Speaker B: Absolutely. [00:01:17] Speaker A: Everybody has a story. It doesn't matter about your last name. [00:01:21] Speaker B: Right. That's true. And I've at peace with it. In the day we're in, especially social media and so forth, there's an assumption to know something that you may not know. But the Lord has set us up to have individuality. [00:01:36] Speaker A: Yes. [00:01:37] Speaker B: In any situation, any family, that's the way it goes. And I'm just glad, like, people like yourself that avail themselves to know who meet Larry Clark, you know, and not just the brand name of the Clarks, you know. Yeah. [00:01:53] Speaker A: And, I mean, there's nothing wrong with that in itself, but. But as individuals and, you know, we've talked about this off the air, but as individuals, we all have a different path that we walk. [00:02:06] Speaker B: Yes. [00:02:07] Speaker A: And yours is so unique. Yours is very, very unique. [00:02:11] Speaker B: Right, right. As we discussed, one of the things I don't think. Well, I would say people would not think it of me coming from where I've come from. But as I shared with you off the air, you know, I was homeless. I lived in a shelter for about half a year. This is years ago. But to go from that to where I'll be at the music hall or producing, hearing music on the radio, being on television, cbs, that kind of stuff is just a testament to what God can do in any life. [00:02:43] Speaker A: You don't see it immediately, Right? [00:02:45] Speaker B: Absolutely. And I tell my children, I know you're gonna always hear me say, I tell my Children. But you can't find a Bible story that didn't have a great struggle or affliction before the glory came. He doesn't just walk you into it. There's always a low, if you will, you know, many of the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivereth out of them all. All of them. And how could it be many if you're righteous? But that's the way it is. And I just thankful to him that. Hallelujah. When no one's there. He's right there. He's right there. [00:03:24] Speaker A: Give me just a tiny background of what is gonna happen on September 27th. [00:03:31] Speaker B: Okay. [00:03:32] Speaker A: And then I wanna play the song. [00:03:34] Speaker B: Thank you. [00:03:35] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:03:35] Speaker B: Tiny background is. It is a musical stage play. So, like as mentioned before, the soundtrack, you will get. But you. Here's the one thing. I try not to ruin it for people. I wanna surprise them so bad. But you're gonna see an evolution of the events that happened to me that inspired the book. So a teenage cast. We have a teenage cast. My son plays me. And we go from high school to today. Yes. And so that part is amazing. And we have an extraordinary. I'm so happy for who will be featured. Pastor Christian Adams of Hartford Memorial. Oh, beautiful. Yes. So Hartford has been amazing church. And my. All of them, Zavet. You know, she's been on Twinkie albums. But anyway, even our two guys, leading guys, they've been in multiple movies. [00:04:24] Speaker A: Yes. [00:04:25] Speaker B: Trisha Cannon and our new one, Marshana Webb, her daughter is in it. Her name is Damarionna Webb as well. But anyway, y' all gonna love it. Y' all gonna love the journey we take and how we make Detroit beautiful. [00:04:38] Speaker A: Mm. Yes. The sweetness of a teenager. [00:04:45] Speaker B: Yes. [00:04:45] Speaker A: And being in love. And then when reality hits, it's actually a Bible story in itself. [00:04:56] Speaker B: Absolutely. All right. This is my last. I hate when movies give all the secrets in the trailer and you get to the movie and you've seen all the high points. I'll give you one more. Our young people. The song is actually called Teenage Love. They're singing a duet called Teenage Love. [00:05:14] Speaker A: Oh, come on, y'. [00:05:15] Speaker B: All. I promise you it's gonna. Y' all up, y'. All. You gotta get your tickets. You gotta. Because you. You wanna get the seats that you want. But that part when I'm in practice and they do. They hit that Teenage Love. I get chills. [00:05:28] Speaker A: Oh, see, I love that. So let's listen to the lead single. [00:05:31] Speaker B: Yes. [00:05:32] Speaker A: From the soundtrack. And. And then we'll come back and talk about how people can get tickets and love you, Randy. [00:05:40] Speaker B: Did I do something wrong to have to wait for so long? Will you marry me? [00:05:54] Speaker A: Will you marry me? Larry Clark in the studio. What a beautiful, beautiful song. [00:06:00] Speaker B: Thank you, Randy. [00:06:01] Speaker A: And it is the name of the musical stage play as well. [00:06:05] Speaker B: Correct. [00:06:06] Speaker A: And I love this because I know that you've had iterations of this and you've done it in different, you know, spaces. [00:06:16] Speaker B: Right. [00:06:16] Speaker A: But you're at the music Hall, Right? [00:06:19] Speaker B: Right. [00:06:19] Speaker A: What? [00:06:20] Speaker B: Yeah. I felt like it was time to take it just one step higher. As some of you may know, I did the hallelujah stage play about myself and my family, and that one we did take on the road. We went to Howard theater and so forth. But this one, I was like, okay, let's go for home big time. And that's where it led us to this. So I'm. I'm it. It just seems like this is what God was dropping in my spirit, you know, for real. You just got. All of us got to listen. What does he want? What to do? Because it could be anywhere. But I was like, this is what I feel like he's leading. So. Yes. September 27th at the Music Hall. Two shows. [00:06:59] Speaker A: Two shows Saturday. How do we get tickets? [00:07:02] Speaker B: You can go to will you marry me play.com or the williamary play.com. you can go to Ticketmaster. You can go to music hall.org and find a show, but there's so many. And then if you want physical, you can go to God's world or actual Hartford memorial church. Yeah. They're so kind. [00:07:22] Speaker A: God bless you. I know, I know. I love working with them over the years with different events that have happened there as well. So shout out to Hartford. [00:07:31] Speaker B: Yes. And she said, that's my girl. Deborah Bolton. Yeah. Deb was like, say hi. I'm like, of course, of course. [00:07:39] Speaker A: Well, it's a pleasure having you in the studio. [00:07:41] Speaker B: Thank you. [00:07:42] Speaker A: You all have no idea. You know, what happens. We. Before we do these interviews, because, you know, Larry's always been real with me in same way you have. It is just exciting for what's going on in your life. And I'm, you know, so grateful to know that you're a friend in my life as well, because. [00:08:04] Speaker B: Amen. [00:08:04] Speaker A: Lord, if they only knew. [00:08:06] Speaker B: Yes, yes, yes. I just want to say this one last thing. I thank you for what? You've been to Detroit. I mean, come on. You have really been across the board, whether you're a struggling artist, whether you're accomplished artists, whether you're aspiring artists, whatever. It's hard to find that type of support. And what you bring to our community, I really want to express that. You know, I'll tell you in private, but I want your listeners to know that your light shines so bright. [00:08:33] Speaker A: Thank you. [00:08:33] Speaker B: And we need you. So grateful for you. [00:08:35] Speaker A: Thank you so much. Larry Clark, y'. All, Will you marry me? At the Music Hall, September 27th. Be there, because you know I'm going to be there. [00:08:44] Speaker B: Absolutely. Front and center.
