Show Notes

I had a great time discussing “Granny’s Place” with some of the cast and screenwriter/producer Lydia Wright-Hamilton. The movie is about a grandmother who suddenly has to raise her granddaughters, and how her vintage values clash with modern-day realities. We chatted about where the idea for the movie came from, and the roles played by Bishop Corletta Vaughn, Bishop Eric Lloyd, and Randall Johnson, who were in the studio with me. Wright-Hamilton emphasized the importance of having a movie with a strong message without using unnecessary violence or vulgarity. [00:00:00] Speaker A: I am so excited to have some of my favorite people right in the studio with me. I mean, literally favorite people in the studio with me because they have a great project, a great movie that is going to be in Farmington Hills tomorrow. And with me in his studio, Doctor Bishop Corletta Vaughn. [00:00:25] Speaker B: Hey, y'all. [00:00:26] Speaker A: Congratulations to you, by the way. [00:00:28] Speaker B: Thank you, Doctor Randy. Yes, ma'am. [00:00:33] Speaker A: You have inspired me also. Bishop Eric Lloyd. How are you? [00:00:37] Speaker C: Oh, bless you. Bless you. Woman of God. I'm doing phenomenal. [00:00:41] Speaker A: I'm so glad. And my special guest once again, Randall Johnson. Randall Johnson. And the writer and producer and overall woman of God, Pastor Lydia Wright Hamilton. The movie is called Granny's place. [00:01:00] Speaker D: And thank you so much for having us. [00:01:02] Speaker A: I'm so glad you're here. I've been listening to the commercials. [00:01:05] Speaker D: Okay. [00:01:05] Speaker A: And I'm like, oh, wait a minute. I know that voice. [00:01:11] Speaker D: Authoritative but sweet all at the same time. [00:01:14] Speaker A: All at the same time. Bishop Vaughn is in the movie. And you are Granny, right? [00:01:19] Speaker B: I am Granny. Can you believe it? [00:01:21] Speaker A: I cannot believe it. What sort of. I can. [00:01:27] Speaker B: And it's an honor. [00:01:28] Speaker D: I mean. [00:01:28] Speaker B: Cause I really didn't realize how important it was. Pastor Liddy, of course, pulled me in and could get me to do anything, so she just massaged me through the whole process. But it was not until I saw the trailer that it really dawned on me. And the significance of this. [00:01:43] Speaker A: It's so significant. [00:01:45] Speaker B: Yes. [00:01:46] Speaker A: And, Randall, what part do you play? [00:01:48] Speaker E: I play the role of Anthony in the movie. [00:01:51] Speaker A: And Anthony, are you a bit of a troublemaker? [00:01:53] Speaker E: You know what? This time I am not. I'm the boy next door. I'm the good guy. [00:01:58] Speaker B: I am. [00:01:58] Speaker E: I'm the good guy. [00:01:59] Speaker A: Oh, my gosh. That is lovely to know. Bishop, what part do you play? [00:02:06] Speaker D: Bishop? [00:02:07] Speaker C: I play one of the Jenkins brothers, actually. Pastor Welton Smith. He's not here right now. We want to give a shout out to Pastor Welton. Of course, Pastor Welton and myself played the two pastors, and we are brothers in Granny's place. [00:02:20] Speaker A: Ooh, I love this. And you've been playing parts in movies. You're in the movie the Jackie Wilson. [00:02:26] Speaker C: Yes, I played a pastor. Granny's place was my first movie. We filmed this perhaps two years ago. And in between that production and now I'm in four movies and a television series. And most of these movie making companies and producers reach out to me and ask me to be the pastor. And I said, it's easy to be myself. [00:02:48] Speaker A: Exactly. I absolutely love that my friends are in movies. I'll have my debut one day. [00:02:55] Speaker D: Oh, absolutely. [00:02:56] Speaker A: Yes, absolutely. Pastor Lydia, tell me a little bit about the movie. [00:03:01] Speaker D: The movie is about a grandmother who is strong in her faith, and she's struggling with her granddaughters who are tempted by the world's way of doing things, and she's trying to keep them rooted and grounded. And, you know, I think that's the story of most grandparents these days because they're so, so much to attract our young people. I myself was raised by my grandmother, and so I have a certain affection for her and all that she instilled in us. And I think we're missing some of that for sure in 2024. So I think it's a really great message to get out to our youth to encourage the grandmothers who are having to raise their grandchildren, as well as to go beyond the profanity, the nudity, the negativity, the violence and all of that. None of that is in Granny's place. It's a good, wholesome movie for the entire family. [00:03:58] Speaker A: I'm excited about this because you guys are having a premiere tomorrow. It's gonna be in Farmington Hills. And how can someone get tickets? Because we need to see this. [00:04:08] Speaker D: Well, actually, tomorrow is sold out. [00:04:12] Speaker C: Sold out. [00:04:14] Speaker D: I'm thankful for the support of this metropolitan Detroit area. They are truly supporting us. We sold out five theaters, never done before. In the Riviera. [00:04:24] Speaker C: Historic. [00:04:25] Speaker D: Yes. [00:04:25] Speaker A: Yes, in the Riviera. Okay, never mind. I used to live in the area. [00:04:31] Speaker D: So I was adding a show May 26, 26th. [00:04:36] Speaker C: That's what I was thinking. [00:04:38] Speaker B: This is the overflow. [00:04:39] Speaker A: I love the overflow. [00:04:40] Speaker B: Come on, overflow. [00:04:42] Speaker C: So. [00:04:42] Speaker A: And people are home because they're home. [00:04:44] Speaker B: It's the holiday. [00:04:45] Speaker C: It's the holiday. [00:04:45] Speaker B: It's the holiday. [00:04:46] Speaker A: So you have no excuse. How do they get tickets for that? [00:04:49] Speaker D: They can go to eventbrite.com and look for Granny's place. The overflow. [00:04:54] Speaker A: Okay. I love it. Well, you all are in the studio. I just want to say thank you for stopping by in person. I don't get a lot of in person guests anymore, and it's good to see my friends. Randall, thank you so much for stopping by. Bishop. Of course, bishop. Both of my bishops. Absolutely. Y'all have held me down for so many years, and I, you know, I can't. [00:05:19] Speaker B: You hold us down. [00:05:20] Speaker A: Thank you. [00:05:21] Speaker B: You hold the city down. [00:05:23] Speaker A: Amen. I try my best. [00:05:24] Speaker B: The gospel cannot be gospel in the city of Detroit without randomized. [00:05:28] Speaker E: Absolutely. [00:05:29] Speaker B: So we want to celebrate you and what God has used you to do to keep gospel in the city of Detroit when they tried to steal it from us. When they tried to take it from us. When they tried to rob it from us. [00:05:43] Speaker C: Come on, bishop. [00:05:43] Speaker B: Gospel would have been bankrupt in this city gospel music would have been bankrupt in this city if it wasn't for Randy Miles. [00:05:50] Speaker A: So we salute you 30 years almost. [00:05:52] Speaker B: Absolutely. [00:05:53] Speaker D: Yes. [00:05:53] Speaker C: She's the official queen. [00:05:55] Speaker B: She is the queen of gospel radio. [00:05:57] Speaker C: Of gospel radio in Detroit. [00:06:00] Speaker A: I love you so much and looking forward to good things for tomorrow and also on Sunday for the overflow. [00:06:08] Speaker C: Yes. [00:06:09] Speaker A: Thank you so much. [00:06:10] Speaker B: Thank you for having me. [00:06:11] Speaker C: Thank you.
