“Angels in the Wings: The Musical” returns to Detroit with more heart, more music, and more meaning. Playwright, director, and producer Jacquelyn D. Vaughn Whitaker brings this story back for its fourth year. Her vision blends faith, music, dance, and theater into a vivid Nativity retelling. This retelling is through the eyes of Archangels Gabriel, Michael, and Raphael. The music is a mix gospel, jazz, rap, R&B, classical sounds. And the vibrant choreography creates a heavenly experience that celebrates the true wonder of Christmas. I asked Jackie how she came up with the production and she shared how this production […]

[00:00:00] Speaker A: Well, I am on the phone with founder of Sold Out Productions, celebrated playwright, director and producer Jacqueline Vaughn Whitaker. Jackie, how are you? [00:00:12] Speaker B: I am absolutely fabulous, Randy. I'm good. [00:00:15] Speaker A: I'm fabulous for you because I'm excited you are bringing back for the fourth year, Angels in the the Musical. And this is such a great idea about the story of Christmas, but it's from a different point of view. Let everybody know about that. [00:00:34] Speaker B: Yes, it is. From the eyes of the angels. It's the old story everybody heard a zillion times, but never did I ever know that how important the angels were and that they had specific roles in terms of helping Mary and Joseph reach safety in Bethlehem. [00:00:54] Speaker A: Wow. You know, when you're thinking about the story of Christ's birth, you're always thinking about, you know, it says the angels were there, the star was there, the manger was there, but you have to kind of dive deep to get there. How did you do that? [00:01:12] Speaker B: I'm going to tell you this. I had a dream about angels. I had a dream, and there were so many things that been going on in my life, and it just touched me in such a way that I said, okay, he's trying to tell me something here, so let me go do some research. So I did research to find out that there were archangels, and those archangels had different names and had different duties that they had that are in the Bible. [00:01:42] Speaker A: Mm. [00:01:42] Speaker B: I said, okay, that sounds interesting. So I kept going. And being a writer that I am, I said, I'm gonna write a piece on it. Then all of a sudden I said, I'm gonna write a production. And then all of a sudden, I'm gonna make it a musical because I love Christmas music. I love music, period. [00:01:59] Speaker A: Yeah. [00:02:00] Speaker B: So this production has all genres of music. It's not just the Christmas carols. We have rap, we have jazz, and we have a little bit of dancing. It's a lot of different parts to it. So putting it all together and combining it, I've been very, very blessed that I came up with something that I've gotten great reviews from. So I'm just keeping on doing it. [00:02:27] Speaker A: I am so happy. You are. You know, I got a chance to look at the website, some of pictures. The costumes are magnificent. And just the fusion of the different, like you said, genres of music just makes it all fit together. And on top of all of that, this is for a good cause, too. [00:02:48] Speaker B: Yes. Yes, it is. I really believe that our youth and people use that phrase all the time with our future, but our youth are our today and our future. Because with things happening the way they are right now and the cutbacks and, and all of these things that are affecting them, not being able to get the type of support, what better time to offer an opportunity to put this on? I've worked hard all of my life and I've been blessed. I've had some great things happen in my life and I just want as a part of my life to have something that I consider my give back and my philanthropic piece. And this is what I do. I don't look for anything from it other than how can I help somebody else. And that's what I'm doing it for. [00:03:32] Speaker A: I absolutely love it. Well, your foundation is called Black United. [00:03:37] Speaker B: Fund of Michigan, and they have a youth initiative that we are particularly funding. [00:03:44] Speaker A: Well, Angels in the the musical will be at the historic Garden Theater in Detroit coming up on December 13th. And you have two performances. And it's very special because you have the general admission and then you have the vip, includes the buffet, beverages, preferred seating and that kind of thing. So how can they get a hold of tickets? And I'm going to get all that information on our website as well. [00:04:12] Speaker B: Well, if you'd like to find out about buying tickets, you can go to angelsinthewings.net angelsinthewings.net and if anybody needs any information, we do have an office number 2486-820773-24868-20773. But definitely we're looking for participation and support. Any way you can give a gift, Give somebody a gift of buying them a ticket. Instead of going to a big old store trying to pick out something, give them a gift. [00:04:55] Speaker A: And it's a gift that will keep giving as well. [00:04:58] Speaker B: Yes, it keeps giving. And it's something that will live with you when you see this show. And I want you to come, Randy, for sure. I want you to be my guest. [00:05:07] Speaker A: Oh, thank you. I can't wait to see it. Thank you so much, Jackie. I appreciate it. Again, it's Angels in the Wings, the musical, and it will be at the Garden theater on Saturday, December 13th. I really think that you need to buy tickets to both of the shows. How about that? [00:05:25] Speaker B: Yes, that would be great. [00:05:27] Speaker A: Thank you so much, Jackie. I appreciate you. [00:05:30] Speaker B: Thank you, Randy.
