The Komen Tissue Bank (KTB) is the only repository in the world for normal breast tissue and matched serum, plasma, and DNA with an ultimate goal of curing breast cancer.
However, breast cancer affects women of color differently than Caucasian women. So it is crucial to study the way breast cancer behaves in different ethnicities. As a result, we are asking African-American, Latina, and Asian women, as well as any other women who belong to ethnic or racial minorities, to contribute healthy breast tissue so we better understand how to treat breast cancer for all women.
The Komen Tissue Bank will join forces with local medical partner Karmanos Cancer Institute, along with community partners Komen Detroit Race for the Cure ® and Wayne State University to hold a tissue collection event here in Detroit, on Saturday, September 24th.
I talked to Katrina Studvent, Director & Race-Chair – Komen Detroit Race for the Cure and Kathi Ridley-Merriweather, Communications and Minority Outreach Coordinator, Komen Tissue Bank – University of Indianapolis about the importance of the event on the 24th…and what our ultimate goal will be.
