Show Notes

Lisa Knowles-Smith & The Brown Singers carry nearly 50 years of gospel history, but they still sound as fresh and fiery as ever. Their roots go back to the late 1970s, when Lisa’s grandmother, Willie Mae Richmond, formed the original group. Lisa joined in elementary school and grew into the powerful lead voice fans know today. Most people assume the group members are siblings, but Lisa cleared that up. They’re family—just not sisters. The lineup includes her aunt, her mother’s first cousin, her god-sister Sierra, and now Lisa’s daughter, who steps into her grandmother’s place. That family connection creates the […]

[00:00:00] Speaker A: I am on the phone with Lisa Noel Smith. My dear, how are you? [00:00:05] Speaker B: I am well. How are you? [00:00:07] Speaker A: I'm fantastic. Listen, we're gonna talk about your single promises in just a minute with the Brown Singers. But first, I just read that the Browns have been a family group since the 70s. [00:00:21] Speaker B: Yes. [00:00:21] Speaker A: Before you were a thought. [00:00:24] Speaker B: Yeah, before I was thought about 1976 and started with my grandmother and my mother. God will next year, the Brown Sneakers will be in existence 50 years. [00:00:35] Speaker A: Wow, that is amazing. One of the things that I know is I can hold a tune better with my siblings than I can with anybody else. It has to be the same thing for y'. All. [00:00:47] Speaker B: Yeah. And, you know, it's weird because we're not actually siblings. I think for years we've kind of had this Brown sisters thing follow us. But, you know, to be honest, we're all family, but not sisters. So I'm my mama's only girl, and my mom only gave birth to two children. That's me and my younger brother, who's five years younger than me. So our group consists of my aunt. Her first cousin Sierra is my God sister. And now, since my mother has passed, my daughter is standing in her grandmother's stand. It's all family, but not necessarily siblings. [00:01:21] Speaker A: Yeah. So everybody was in church harmonizing then. [00:01:25] Speaker B: Yeah. [00:01:28] Speaker A: I absolutely love it. Well, you have one Stellar Awards. I remember voting for y' all for Quartet of the Year and so many other singles. You've been on projects with Ricky Dillard, Pastor Mike Jr. James, Fortune. The list goes on and on. But now you have this new song out. It's called Promises. And this song, I told you off the air, makes me want to run out the studio and come back. How did this come about for you all? [00:02:00] Speaker B: You know, we recorded live in Dallas in January, and I kind of made the decision in November that we would do this live recording. So we had about two months to work it all out. And I just prayed next to God, I was like, all right, you gotta give me some songs. Because I didn't say it. I didn't put it out there. And literally one day, driving to a concert in Mississippi with my kids in the car, Promise is just kind of. I always say it's like downloads. Because a lot of times I don't, like, sit and write. It just comes to me out of the blue. And so I wrote the song on the way to the concert, sang it in the dressing room to the Brown Singers. We recorded it in January, and God has literally breathed life on it. I think at Such a necessary time. [00:02:42] Speaker A: It is a necessary time. I was just gonna say that people need to hear that. His promises are yes and amen. And that song just puts it in perspective. [00:02:55] Speaker B: Please, you do me a fav. Everybody come. [00:03:01] Speaker A: As promises from Lisa Noel Smith and the Brown Singers. Lisa is on the phone with me and I remember you posting this on social media about the live recording, inviting people to come out and some of the people who are involved in that, Donald Lawrence, Daryl Petties and Harvey Watkins Jr. Who is on everybody's project right now. What was that like? [00:03:26] Speaker B: You know, actually all of those were afterthoughts for me because when we did the recording that night, it just kind of. It became a revival. It became, you know, an experience. And afterwards I said, okay, I need somebody to breathe life. And Donna Lawrence, I think, is one of the most iconic voices in gospel music. And he has a, you know, the ability to kind of tell a story, which a lot of his songs are sermon backed as well. He tells talks about how he wrote a lot of his songs from Sunday on in services where his pastor preached sermons. So I just thought it would be fitting to have him kind of introduce this revival experience that we were going in. And of course, Harvey Watkins Jr. Is, in my opinion, one of the greatest of all times, one of the legends in quartet. And I had to. I always try to pay homage in some type of way, unknowingly, to quartet, the greats that have gone on and those that are still living because we stand on their shoulders. [00:04:28] Speaker A: Yes. [00:04:29] Speaker B: And then Darrell Pettis is my twin. I call him. We both call each other affectionately and we grew up together. And he is just a powerhouse preacher and a singer in his own right. And it was just an honor to have him be a part. [00:04:44] Speaker A: Absolutely. Well, the album is called Revival Live in Dallas. It is available now. Right? [00:04:52] Speaker B: It's available now. Wherever you listen, stream or download your music, you can get it there. [00:04:57] Speaker A: And they should. They absolutely should. Well, listen, Lisa, I really appreciate you stopping by the show today. I love your music from day one. So I'm excited about the project. I'm excited with what's going on with the Brown singers as well. Thank you so much for stopping by. How can they find you? [00:05:17] Speaker B: We are on all social media platforms right now because that's the way we stay connected to the people who support and love our music. So Instagram, I am Lisa Knowles Smith. Facebook Lisa no Smith. As well as Lisa no Smith and the Brown singers. We're also on TikTok as I am Lisa no Smith and then, of course, all things Brown singers would be under my label, Evil World Entertainment. And thank you so much for your support and your love for taking the time out to speak with us and for playing and supporting our music. We appreciate you so much. [00:05:49] Speaker A: Thank you so much. God bless. [00:05:51] Speaker B: God bless you.
