For Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we are doing something a little different. We know that screening at the age of 40 is a must for Black women in the United States because they have worse outcomes when it comes to breast cancer. But what about other cancers? Today I had the opportunity to speak with my friend Dr. Eleanor Walker, Breast Radiation Oncologist at Henry Ford Health, about a new study that centers on uncovering the “why.”
The Voices of Black Women study is a new research project that aims to learn why Black women in the United States have such a high incidence of cancer and other health conditions. The study also wants to learn more about the factors that contribute to the high mortality rate and the resilience of Black women. The goal is to recruit 100,000 Black women across the country, and at least 3,000 from Michigan. This study could lead to new treatments and strategies for preventing and treating cancer in Black women.
