When I grew up, I had lots of bouts with colorism, from the kid that smeared lotion all over my clothing because I was light-skinned, to a former employer telling me I got the job not because I was qualified, but because I filled two quotas for them… a woman, and black (but not that black). So, when WDIV’s Evrod Cassimy called me to tell me about this feature he is doing tonight… I had to share.
Colorism is still alive, and after talking with students at Renaissance High School in Detroit, Evrod and I have decided it’s time to open that discussion for you as well.
